Audra Wolowiec: Concrete Sound

Audra Wolowiec is an interdisciplinary artist whose work oscillates between sculpture, installation, text, and performance with an emphasis on sound and the materiality of language. The installation at Scholes St Studio features works that engage perceptions of sound through visual waveforms and cast concrete that respond to acoustic architecture.

The cast concrete series concrete sound are based on sound absorbing panels used in recording studios,  drawing attention to the functional acoustic panels that punctuate the space. waveforms are a series of handmade paper sheets based on wave interference patterns, created during a Workspace Residency at Dieu Donné in 2017. The cast paper reliefs, anechoic, meaning without echo, resemble the geometric shapes of acoustic panels, yet their texture is distinctly altered, playing with materiality, tone, and the echo of an existing form.

Wolowiec’s work has been shown internationally and in the United States at MASS MoCA, CCS Bard Hessel Museum, Stony Brook University, Art in General, and Studio 10. Her work has been featured in BOMB Magazine, Modern Painters, The New York Times, The Brooklyn Rail, CAA Journal, and Sound American. She currently teaches at Parsons School of Design and Dia:Beacon, and is the founder and director of the publishing platform Gravel Projects.
