Scholes Street Studio is pleased to present Daniel Hill: Frequencies, an exhibition of paintings that convey a sonic world.

Scholes Street Studio is a rehearsal, recording and performance space that presents exhibitions of art relating to music or sound - art works that engage sound directly, or make music their subject matter; works inspired or informed by music; or works that simply have a musical or lyrical sensibility.

Daniel Hill is a visual artist who makes art explicitly about sound.  His paintings can be seen as visual representations of sonic patterns.  "Through an intentional form of synesthesia, I have discovered a similarity in my paintings to the visual structure of sound revealed in cymatics, as well as the prevalence of interference patterns found throughout nature.  I am fascinated by the fractal like architecture of the natural world and its relationship to the structure of sound.  A relationship akin to synchrony, or a tendency for similar frequencies to synchronize when in proximity, is the prime metaphor inspiring me..."

Because Daniel is also a musician, his process as an artist is akin to making music, to performing a musical composition.  "Just as a musician plays a performance in time, my paintings are made in a kind of performance also - line by line slowly applied with a squeeze bottle hovering just above the surface in a session of meditative concentration with little room for error."

The process results in works that exhibit rich texture and physicality, even as they manifest the graphic representation of sonic pulsations.
