Emily Berger
MARKING TIME

Opening Reception
November 16, 6pm

Scholes Street Studio is pleased to present Emily Berger: Marking Time, an exhibition of paintings that have a remarkable correlation with the composition and structure of music.

The paintings are made by brushing, rubbing, wiping and scraping oil paint along horizontal bands on bare wood panels, alluding somewhat to spectrograms, as visual representations of sound.

The musical characteristics of the paintings reveal themselves in two ways. First, the horizontal bands are metronomic, with decided movement swaying back and forth. Second, the brush strokes are syncopated, punctuating the horizontal bands with repeated marks that create rhythm and pulse.

In laying down these repeating brush strokes along horizontal lines, moving from left to right and from one line down to the next, the artist is marking time.
